Module 17: Capturing and Processing Checks Online

17.3: Resolve a Duplicate Check

Resolve a Duplicate Check

2 of 7

In online mode, if a duplicate check is detected a Duplicate Check Detected prompt appears requesting that the user resolve the issue. OTCnet determines and detects duplicate checks based on a match of the Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) and the check amount.

Check Capture Supervisor and Check Capture Lead Operator are the only authorized users who can accept a duplicate check. Therefore, before a Check Capture Operator can accept a duplicate check, a Check Capture Supervisor or Check Capture Lead Operator must log in to authorize the duplicate check. If a Check Capture Lead Operator  scanned the check, additional authorization is not required. The Login ID and Password dialog box only appears if a Check Capture Supervisor or Check Capture Lead Operator is accepting a duplicate check for a Check Capture Operator.

If a check is scanned twice and the information entered is for the same amount , OTCnet displays an error message containing both scanned images and requests confirmation. If the check is scanned twice and information is entered for a different amount , OTCnet does not catch the error and will allow the duplicate entry. Note: The financial institution will later reject one of the duplicate checks.
