A lot can happen in nearly 30 years. Although the workforce and technology have both changed, there are still a few elements that have not altered.

  • People want to learn.
  • They want to be prepared for any new changes.
  • They recognize the importance of collaboration.
  • The mission of continuing to support and improve the Federal Financial system has never wavered.

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service held its annual Government Financial Management Conference (GFMC) at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC from August 12-14, 2019. The three-day event, which had the theme “Modernizing through Innovation”, included 55 educational on-site and virtual sessions, led by federal financial management experts from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, Office of Management and Budget, the Federal Reserve Bank, and select partners and agents.

Highlights from the event included Dave Lebryk, Fiscal Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of the Treasury, speaking about agencies improving their customer experience by using more human centric design. Tim Gribben, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s new Commissioner, told attendees about his new role at the Fiscal Service, the recently launched CFO Letter, the U.S. Treasury Department Vision and the upcoming Customer Service Survey.

The Office of Financial Innovation and Transformation (FIT) presented several innovative sessions including the “Current State of Robotic Processing Automation”, “Fraud is not a Four-Letter Word”, “Federal Financial Management Reimagined”, and “Emerging Technologies and Trends Across the Fiscal Service”, to name a few.

Other program areas offered sessions on topics such as the latest developments in government accounting, payments, collections, debt management, and the federal budget. The panelists engaged with the attendees and expanded their knowledge about ways they can work together to improve the federal financial management community.

A lot has changed in the last 30 years, but with events such as the GFMC and innovative presentations from offices like FIT, and the federal financial management community’s desire to learn, collaborate and prepare, we are headed to a better and brighter future in the federal government.
